How many members does a yoga studio need to break even?
A studio's rent and front desk are fixed. Teacher pay rises with the schedule. Break-even is the number of members, or member equivalents from packs, that covers the space.
Break-even point
-
members a month to cover every cost
Profit at today's level
-
per month, before owner pay
Cushion above break-even
-
how many you could lose and still cover costs
The starting numbers are an example for a yoga studio. Replace them with yours.
The worked example
Each member brings in $130 a month and costs $20 to serve. That leaves $110 toward fixed costs of $17,000 a month. Divide one by the other and you need 155 members to break even. Every member past that adds $110 to profit.
Ways to lower break-even in a yoga studio
- Move pack buyers onto memberships.
- Cut or merge classes that run below break-even attendance.
- Rent the room for workshops and private sessions in empty hours.
