How many stylists does a salon need to break even?
A salon's rent, front desk and utilities are fixed. Each stylist brings in services and costs commission and product. Break-even is the number of fully booked stylists that covers the fixed side.
Break-even point
-
stylists a month to cover every cost
Profit at today's level
-
per month, before owner pay
Cushion above break-even
-
how many you could lose and still cover costs
The starting numbers are an example for a salon. Replace them with yours.
The worked example
Each stylist brings in $8,000 a month and costs $4,400 to serve. That leaves $3,600 toward fixed costs of $18,000 a month. Divide one by the other and you need 5 stylists to break even. Every stylist past that adds $3,600 to profit.
Ways to lower break-even in a salon
- Raise rebooking rates so each stylist's book stays full.
- Price services by stylist level, so senior time earns more.
- Order retail product in smaller amounts, more often.
