Getting the forecast right for an MSP

  • Use contract billing as the base, in the week it is collected.
  • Add annual license renewals on their dates.
  • Put hardware purchases in the week you pay the supplier, and the client payment in the week it usually arrives.

An example

An MSP with 40 clients bills $95,000 a month in contracts, collected mostly in the first two weeks. In March, an annual security tool renewal of $28,000 lands, and a client's $35,000 server order goes to the supplier. The client pays in 30 days. The forecast shows that week before you place the order.

What to watch

  • Annual license renewals landing in one month
  • Hardware purchased for clients and not yet paid
  • Project invoices past 60 days
