How many students does a dance studio need to break even?

A studio's rent and front desk are fixed, while teacher pay rises with the class schedule. Break-even is the number of enrolled students that covers the space and the office.

Break-even point
-
students a month to cover every cost
Profit at today's level
-
per month, before owner pay
Cushion above break-even
-
how many you could lose and still cover costs

The starting numbers are an example for a dance studio. Replace them with yours.

The worked example

Each student brings in $120 a month and costs $35 to serve. That leaves $85 toward fixed costs of $15,000 a month. Divide one by the other and you need 177 students to break even. Every student past that adds $85 to profit.

Ways to lower break-even in a dance studio

  • Fill existing classes before adding new ones.
  • Rent the studio out in empty hours.
  • Offer annual tuition plans that keep families through summer.
