How many jobs does an auto detailing business need to break even?

Each detailing job costs labor and supplies. What is left covers the shop, insurance, equipment and marketing. Break-even is the number of jobs a month that covers that.

Break-even point
-
jobs a month to cover every cost
Profit at today's level
-
per month, before owner pay
Cushion above break-even
-
how many you could lose and still cover costs

The starting numbers are an example for an auto detailing business. Replace them with yours.

The worked example

Each job brings in $220 and costs $70 to serve. That leaves $150 toward fixed costs of $13,000 a month. Divide one by the other and you need 87 jobs a month to break even. Every job past that adds $150 to profit.

Ways to lower break-even in an auto detailing business

  • Sell maintenance plans to retail customers for repeat visits.
  • Push higher-margin packages like coatings and correction.
  • Fill slow weekdays with dealer and fleet work.
