How many route customers does a pool service business need to break even?
Each route customer pays a monthly fee and costs chemicals and tech time. What is left covers trucks, insurance and the office. Break-even is the route size that covers it.
Break-even point
-
route customers a month to cover every cost
Profit at today's level
-
per month, before owner pay
Cushion above break-even
-
how many you could lose and still cover costs
The starting numbers are an example for a pool service business. Replace them with yours.
The worked example
Each route customer brings in $180 a month and costs $70 to serve. That leaves $110 toward fixed costs of $9,000 a month. Divide one by the other and you need 82 route customers to break even. Every route customer past that adds $110 to profit.
Ways to lower break-even in a pool service business
- Build denser routes. More pools per street means more pools per tech hour.
- Charge a flat monthly fee that covers chemicals, so chemical price rises do not eat the margin.
- Keep a winter service plan at a lower price instead of letting customers cancel.
