Getting the forecast right for a landscaping business

  • Put spring hiring and material buys in the weeks before the first invoices go out.
  • Separate maintenance billing from install payments.
  • Keep truck and equipment loan payments in through the winter weeks.

An example

In late February a landscaping company with eight crews starts hiring, buys mulch and plants, and gets trucks ready. Wages and materials go out in March. Maintenance invoices for April go out at the end of April and get paid in May. The forecast shows that spring gap, which is often the tightest stretch of the year.

What to watch

  • Cash on hand going into November
  • Commercial accounts past 60 days
  • Install deposits collected against the work still to do
